Certification

Just attending Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist prep class does not make you certified (although you will receive a certificate of completion).  To become certified as a CIE or CIEC, you must go through the independent certifying body, American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC).    There are no prerequisites for taking the Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist course, but you must meet requirements to qualify for the Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) or Council- Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) certification.

Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) Prerequisites

Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist applicants must possess one of the following combinations of two (2) years education and relevant field experience:

  • A 2-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (15 credit hours) in engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with a minimum of one (1) year of documented field experience conducting indoor air quality investigations.
  • No degree, with at least two (2) years of documented field experience conducting indoor air quality investigations. (High school diploma or GED required.)

Specific questions about your experience qualifying for the Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist examination must be directed to ACAC at (800) 942-0832.

Council- Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) Prerequisites

Applicants interested in the Council-Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) must possess one of the following combinations of eight (8) years education and relevant field experience:

  • A 4-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (30 credit hours) in engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with a minimum of four (4) years of documented field experience conducting indoor air quality investigations.
  • A 2-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (15 credit hours) in engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with a minimum of six (6) years of documented field experience conducting indoor air quality investigations.
  • No degree, with at least eight (8) years of documented field experience conducting indoor air quality investigations. (High school diploma or GED required.)

Also, CIEC Applicants must demonstrate experience in several areas of IAQ. Experience should include investigations, consulting and project management and/or report writing, and must come from at least three of the following five areas:

  • Lead/Asbestos
  • Microbial
  • IH/Chemicals/Toxicology
  • Building Sciences
  • IAQ/HVAC

Specific questions about your experience qualifying for the Council- Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) examination must be directed to ACAC at (800) 942-0832.

Which should I chose: CIE or CIEC?

The difference between the Council-Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE) and Council-Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC) designations relates to your years of experience. The exams pull from a similar pool of questions and our preparatory course is the same for both.  The Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist exam has 100 multiple choice questions, whereas the Council- Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant has 120 questions.

If you qualify for the CIEC, then it is recommended to test for that certification.

What if I don’t qualify for either?

If you don’t meet the experience requirements for the CIE (or CIEC) certification, you should still consider taking the Council- Certified Indoor Environmentalist Course.  The course will help you understand the key areas of IAQ and help you perform high-quality assessments while you build your required experience.

Most states will allow you to perform indoor air quality consulting services while you are building your field experience.  Call us at (312) 920-9393 for more information.
