Are you following the industry’s standard of care in your mold inspection business? Do you even know what the industry’s standard of care is? Join Indoor Sciences for real answers to your practical questions.
Our goal is to send you home from our course with the ability to perform thorough microbial investigations that impress your clients and colleagues. We provide example checklists, report outlines, contracts and remediation specifications that are worth the cost of the course themselves! Best of all, our course prepares you for the industry’s most respected microbial certifications: Council-certified Microbial Investigator (CMI) and Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC).
The American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC) is a non-profit organization that awards the Certified Microbial Investigator and Certified Microbial Consultant to deserving candidates. These are the only two mold certifications that are recognized by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB), the same organization that recognizes Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH) and Certified Indoor Environmentalists (CIE). Most other mold certifications are really just “certificate” programs that have little to no credibility.
On-site vs. Online
You now have two options to take the Certified Microbial Investigator course: on-site or online.
- Our on-site course is 2 days in length and includes an additional 2-days of online supplemental material. Our on-site Certified Microbial Investigator course is offered at cities across the US each month. For a list of upcoming dates, click on Certified Microbial Investigator On-site.
- Our online course includes the same exact technical content as the on-site class and is accessible any time of day or night. The online course takes 32 hours to complete. For more information, click on Certified Microbial Investigator Online.
Both the online and on-site courses include a practice test to better prepare you for the Council-certified Microbial Investigator (CMI) and Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) examinations.
Cost
The cost of the Certified Microbial Investigator course taken on-site is $870 ($125 discounts to members of the Indoor Air Quality Association). Alternatively, if you would like to take the entire CMI program online, the cost is $800 ($125 discounts to members of the IAQA). For more information on IAQA memberships, please visitwww.iaqa.org and click on “Join IAQA”.

Certification
Just attending the IAQA’s Certified Microbial Investigator course does not make you certified (although you will receive a certificate of completion). To become certified as a CMI or CMC, you must go through the independent certifying body, American Council for Accredited Certification. There are no prerequisites for taking the Certified Microbial Investigator course, but you must meet requirements to qualify for the Council-Certified Microbial Investigator (CMI) or Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) certification.
Certified Microbial Investigator (CMI) Prerequisites
Certified Microbial Investigator applicants must possess one of the following combinations of two (2) years education and relevant field experience:
- A 2-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (15 credit hours) in microbiology, engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with at least one (1) year documented experience in microbial sampling.
- No degree with at least two (2) years of consulting experience in microbial sampling. (high school diploma or GED required.)
Specific questions about your experience qualifying for the Certified Microbial Investigator examination must be directed to ACAC at (800) 942-0832.
Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) Prerequisites
Applicants interested in the Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) must possess one of the following combinations of eight (8) years education and relevant field experience:
- A 4-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (30 credit hours) in microbiology, engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with a minimum of four (4) years of documented field experience in microbial sampling.
- A 2-year post-secondary degree or its equivalent (15 credit hours) in microbiology, engineering, science, architecture, industrial hygiene or related field of science with at least six (6) years documented experience in microbial sampling.
- No degree with at least eight (8) years of consulting experience in microbial sampling. (high school diploma or GED required.)
CMC applicants must demonstrate experience in designing and conducting microbial sampling regimens. Experience should come from the following three areas:
- Building Sciences
- Microbiology
- Microbial Risk Analysis
Specific questions about your experience qualifying for the Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) examination must be directed to ACAC at (800) 942-0832.
Which should I chose: CMI or CMC?
The difference between the Council-certified Microbial Investigator (CMI) and Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) designations relates to your years of experience. The exams pull from a similar pool of questions and our preparatory course is the same for both. The Certified Microbial Investigator exam has 100 multiple choice questions, whereas the Certified Microbial Consultant has 120 questions.
If you qualify for the CMC, then it is recommended to test for that certification.
What if I don’t qualify for either?
If you don’t meet the experience requirements for the CMI (or CMC) certification, you should still consider taking the Certified Microbial Investigator Course. The course is hosted by the Indoor Air Quality Association and it will help you perform high-quality assessments while you build your required experience. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion from the IAQA.
Most states will allow you to perform microbial consulting services while you are building your field experience. Call us at (312) 920-9393 for more information.
