What is the CMC certification?
The Council-Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC) is a high-level certification for professionals that are experienced at inspecting properties for mold. The certification is offered by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC). Our company, Indoor Sciences, offers a CMC preparatory course called the Microbial Investigator Course.

What are the CMC prerequisites?
Not everyone qualifies to become a Council-certified Microbial Consultant (CMC). The ACAC requires applicants to have 8 years of field experience in mold inspection and sampling. They reduce the experience requirement to 4 years if you have a 4-year college degree in science, engineering, or related field or 6 years if you have a 2-year college degree in science, engineering, or related field. If you are new to the field and have less experience, you may want to target the non-accredited CSMI certification which requires no experience. Or if you only have 2 years of experience, you should consider the accredited certification that is one step below, the CMI.

What is the exam like?
The CMC exam is offered through computerized testing centers found around the world. There is also a newer option to take the exam online with a proctor viewing you through a webcam.
The following are important details related to the CMC examination:
- All multiple choice questions with four possible answers
- 120 total questions
- Passing grade is 75%
- Duration: 3 hours
- Closed-book exam
How do I prepare for the CMC exam?
