What is the CRIE certification?
The Certified Residential Indoor Environmentalist (CRIE) is a certification for individuals just starting in the field of indoor air quality. The CRIE is a non-accredited certification that is offered by the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC). Our company, Indoor Sciences, offers a preparatory course for this certification. If you are just starting in a career of investigating air quality problems such as mold, VOCs, allergens, dampness, poor ventilation, and sick building syndrome, the CRIE is great certification to document your knowledge as you build up your experience. The CRIE is a stepping stone to the higher level certifications of CIE and CIEC.
What are the CRIE prerequisites?
The only requirement to become a Certified Residential Indoor Environmentalist (CRIE) is current employment in the indoor environmental field. If you have a few years of experience in the field, you may want to target the CIE certification which requires 2 years of experience. Or if you have 8 years of experience, you should consider the most popular and most prestigious ACAC certification, the CIEC.

What is the exam like?
The CRIE exam is offered through computerized testing centers found around the world. There is also a newer option to take the exam online with a proctor viewing you through a webcam.

- All multiple choice questions with four possible answers
- 50 total questions
- Passing grade is 70%
- Duration: 2 hours
- Closed-book exam
How do I prepare for the CRIE exam?
The best way to prepare for the CRIE certification is by taking our Indoor Environmentalist Course, which is sometimes referred to as the “CRIE Course”.
