The Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation is considered to be the pinnacle of certifications related to indoor environments.  There are two large hurdles to getting this certification:

  1. You must have the right college education and experience to qualify
  2. You must pass a difficult examination

To qualify for the CIH exam you must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or engineering with half of the coursework focusing in on toxicology, fundamentals of industrial hygiene, measurements, and controls. You must also have 4 years professional experience in the industrial hygiene field and have two letters of recommendation to detail your professional experience, one of which must come from a current Certified Industrial Hygienist.
